Hello Friend and Fellow Achiever!
There’s an old folk song about a thirsty traveler who comes across an old water pump in the desert.
Attached to the pump the traveler finds a note. “This pump is old,” the note began, “but she works. There’s water down below … but you must have faith and believe.
“Now there’s a jar under the rock beneath the pump with some water in it. Don’t go drinking the water … there’s just enough to prime the pump. Just pour the water in and pump like mad. You’ve got to give of yourself before you’re worthy to receive.
“Then, drink all the water you can hold. Wash your face to your feet. Just leave the bottle full for others. Thank you kindly – Desert Pete.” [1]
The Law of Compensation
Essayist and philosopher Ralph Waldo Emerson explained in his famous essay Compensation, that every person is compensated in like manner for what they have contributed.
The farmer must first plow and prepare the soil, plant the seed, cultivate the land, and wait for the harvest.
A fisherman must venture out onto the sea, and then bait his hook or cast his net. Even the hunter must track and pursue his prey.
In modern life, we often talk about “paying your dues” … which means starting at the bottom in some low-level job and taking on tasks or roles that are not ideal or particularly glamorous, but are necessary in order to learn and advance in our craft.
Motivational speaker and author Zig Ziglar, in addition to having a really cool name, is quoted to have said, that “You can have everything in life you want, if you will just help enough other people get what they want.”
Opportunities to help other people get what they want surround you, every day. It’s up to you however, to figure out what those wants are, craft a solution, and deliver it to enough people to receive the compensation you desire.
Overcoming Adversity
Life, it can be said, is not for the faint of heart.
You’ve no doubt experienced this.
This journey of life is filled with obstacles, setbacks, compromises, and uncertainties. Living a fulfilling and meaningful life, especially one that will deliver everything you want, requires determination, resilience, and courage.
In stories of myth and legend, there is a central character or hero who goes on an adventure or quest, experiences many obstacles and challenges, persists through many failures, defeats and setbacks, is ultimately victorious and successful, and returns to his home transformed.
The Hero’s Journey
Your life is YOUR “Hero’s journey.”
As in the classic hero’s journey of literature and legend, you will experience failure and defeat.
Defeat however can be a stumbling block, or it can be a stepping-stone. Whichever it proves to be will depend on your mental attitude, and how you relate yourself to it.
Defeat is temporary. It is never the same as failure, unless and until you accept it as such.
Most of the failures we experience are actually only temporary defeats, and these often prove to be blessings in disguise.
Every adversity, every set-back, every heartache, and every defeat or failure contains within it a seed of equivalent or greater benefit. It’s up to you to figure out what that seed is. [2]
Your mental attitude regarding the challenges and defeats you face, are the most important factor that will ultimately determine whether you rise with the tides of good fortune, or fall from the burdens of misfortune.
“You just can’t beat the person who never gives up”. [3]
Adversity and Achievement
Remember two things:
- Individual success usually comes in exact proportion to the scope of defeat the individual has experienced and mastered.
- The worst that can happen to you may instead be the best thing to happen to you, if you don’t let that thing get the best of you.
“When defeat comes, accept it as a signal that your plans were not sound. Rebuild those plans and set sail once more toward your goal.” – Napoleon Hill [4]
What’s The Worst That Could Happen?
An attitude of pessimism rarely serves you well.
An attitude of optimism, a definite goal, and a clear sense of your why – will enable you to persevere through the tough times, and reap the rewards abandoned by pessimists who quit too easily and too soon.
“The pessimist complains about the wind. The optimist expects it to change. The realist adjusts his sails.” – William Arthur Ward
Simple mental optimism and a positive mental attitude alone however are rarely enough.
You have to ACT.
You must learn to adapt yourself to the circumstances of the moment, to keep yourself moving toward the goal that the optimist in you knows you can and will achieve. You must learn to position your sails so that the winds of opportunity carry you to your intended destination.
It is those – perhaps you – with a paradoxical combination of optimism, tempered with realism, who will end up achieving the extraordinary.
